THE FUTURE OF CREATIVE GYUMRI IS HERE!

Gyumri is on its way to rebuilding its brand as the Creative Capital of Armenia. Ballet 2021 has launched the creation of a state-of-the-art multi-purpose international performing arts center in Gyumri. The Center will serve as a space for creativity, experimentation, and education with the vision of a two-way journey without boundaries, sharing Armenian values with the world and bringing the achievements of the world to Armenia. The project was initiated as a sub-grant, implemented within the Bridge4CSOs project led by AGBU in partnership with EPF and funded by the European Union.

WHAT IS THE KHARATIAN EXPERIENTIAL CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS?

The mission of the Kharatian Experiential Centre’s for the Performing Arts is to put Gyumri and Armenia on the map as a unique destination to experience art and spirituality. As a place for learning and creativity, it will leverage the newest developments in art while pioneering interdisciplinary research and experiential learning programs that will attract artists and visitors from all over the world.  In this way, the center will be the heart of creativity and its pulse will become universal.

WHAT IS THE KHARATIAN EXPERIENTIAL CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS?
The Space

Award-winning Montreal architect Azad Chichmanian will work with Ballet2021 to realize The Kharatian Arts Center Gyumri as an innovative space. The design will be approached on three levels. First, there is the functional level of designing an efficient center for the performing arts – this means thinking a space for teaching, its educational components, components of the residency program, for research, exploration and play. Second, must be put into a wider context of the urban fabric. The Kharatian Arts Center Gyumri is aimed at reviving a part of the city that has been neglected. In this way it can act as a hub of daily cultural life in the city. Lastly, there is the symbolic aspect of the building. Dance is a form of ascension, both physically and mentally but also spiritually. This plays against the history of the building, where gravity was once such a destructive force and where the earthquake brought such destruction. Now, in that same place, within those same walls, the building can float, even soar. At the same time, those who use the building will themselves be lifted, both literally and spiritually.
